Abiquiu<\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

The present village of Abiquiu, population approximately 2,707, is built on the ruins of a prehistoric Tewa Pueblo dating back to the 13th to 16th centuries.\u00a0 Multiple families settled here on a community land grant given to them by Governor Tomas Velez Capuchin in 1754.\u00a0 The new community was called the Pueblo de Abiquiu and became an important trading center for a large area of the Southwest.\u00a0 During this time, Abiquiu was the third largest settlement in all of New Mexico.\u00a0 Now, the town basically consists of the Abiquiu Inn, Bode\u2019s General Store and the post Office.\u00a0 However, it\u2019s the surrounding area that draws thousands of visitors a year to this magical land known for it\u2019s \u201cCliffs of Shining Stone\u201d.\u00a0 This amazing part of New Mexico was the former home of and inspiration to Georgia O\u2019Keeffe and presently the jump off point to amazing adventures and incredible landscapes along the Rio Chama River.<\/p>\n
